pirateygoodness: (castle: a book? you shouldn't have.)
Some drive-by Yuletide recs before the archive crashes again author reveal:

The Shape of A Sooner State, Fringe, Olivia and Altlivia gen
This story is just the best. Probably my favourite Fringe fic of the bunch this year (that's a lie - my favourite is the next story in this entry), this is a gorgeous, perfect study in the contrast between the two Olivias and the two universes. The author does a fantastic job of looking at the subtlety, the way a lot of both sides is the same, and I love it.

The Art of Fugue, Fringe, Astrid gen
Gentle, sweet fic about how Astrid is quietly extraordinary. This hits something in my heart, in a really important way, and I think it touches on something that the show doesn't acknowledge about Astrid, but that fandom often does - Astrid is so human, so well-adjusted, compared to everyone else around her, and that's actually astounding. Run, don't walk to read this.

happiness hit her like a train on a track, Castle, Beckett/Alexis, PG-13
You guys, I don't know why this story is so good. It's Castle futurefic, and Alexis is a plucky Columbia law student and Beckett is a lesbian cougar and it just works. Surprisingly well. Like, I read this twice in a row and then sort of wanted to cuddle it, IDK.

The Beginning After The End, Castle, Beckett/Castle, PG-13.
I'll admit this right off the bat - I hate a lot of Beckett/Castle fic. I've got very particular ideas about the way their relationship should play out romantically, if it should play out at all, and a lot of stories don't work for me. This one, though, hits exactly the right notes. It's, uh, zombie apocalypse fic, and just the right balance of depressing and romantic.

In conclusion: fanfiction is pretty rad.

ALSO: FOUR DAYS UNTIL [livejournal.com profile] girlsgunsfic STORIES ARE DUE, I AM SIMULTANEOUSLY STOKED BEYOND BELIEF AND TERRIFIED THAT EVERY SINGLE PARTICIPANT IS GOING TO DEFAULT AT THE LAST SECOND. LADYCOPS!
pirateygoodness: (festive: ernie & bert!)
You guys, Merry Christmas. I hope whatever you're doing today, you're having a blast doing it, and that you're enjoying the statutory holiday.

I, for one, am OVERFLOWING with seasonal whimsy, and Santa brought me some awfully nice things, and also it is CHRISTMAS, HOW RAD IS THAT. LAST NIGHT RUDOLPH WAS TOTALLY ON THE ROOF OF MY PARENTS' CONDO SO THAT SANTA COULD FILL MY STOCKING, AND NOTHING WILL CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE.

Anyway, [livejournal.com profile] yuletide also happens today, and even though I'm a monster who defaulted, I got an AMAZING story written for me.

Give Us Those Nice Bright Colours, Warehouse 13, Myka/H.G. Wells
Breaking the law itches like cheap hotel sheets. In Sioux Falls, Myka gives herself a twenty-four hour period to commit to the decision.

"There have to be rules," she says to herself. She speaks out loud; Pete's voice is a stinging absence in the otherwise silent room. She has stolen an Artifact from the Warehouse; now she must keep herself apart from the likes of MacPherson and – yes, let's say her name, now – Helena. If she is very clear about her purpose, she will be able to do this right.

She picks up the hotel pen and writes a list of directives on the stationery: I will remain a good person, she writes; I will trust myself to make the right decisions. It doesn't convince her. Surely they've all written these lists; the people who stole from the Warehouse, the people in Warehouse prisons, the people who have been bronzed. Helena.

Of all the Artifacts to silently judge you from across the room, a View-Master is certainly one of the more ridiculous.

This is fabulously-written Myka/H.G., set after the end of season 2, and it's not the take [livejournal.com profile] thrace_ and I have (which is now canon in my heart) but it's FANTASTIC, and Myka is pitch-perfect. All of the kissing - and there's totally kissing - is bittersweet, as it should be, and basically this is everything I could have hoped for in a gift story plus a little bit extra. I'm so grateful to my mystery writer for making this for me. And also that there is good Warehouse 13 fic being written - honestly, for those of you not fully immersed in the hokey, awkwardly written sci-fi-geekery-with-a-heart-of-gold that is this show, YOU ARE MISSING OUT.

People are talking about [livejournal.com profile] yuletide and Yuletide Madness and reposting their letters for treats, and I feel like I should do the same, except that I 100% defaulted on Yuletide this year for the first time ever. Before the deadline, so I am at least able to participate next year if I find the time, but I still feel a little silly having a story written for me, when my recipient will have to wait for a pinch-hit. Alas, RL > fanfiction, etc. In other words, no Yuletide Madness presents for me. However, if you want to write me stories just for, IDK, existing, I think it has become pretty clear what my likes and dislikes are. WRITE AWAY, BENEVOLENT INTERNET STRANGERS.

All of that being said, since break started on Sunday I've been having the BEST TIME wasting my life on WoW (this is a Christmas tradition - I reactivate my account for Winter Veil, then get too busy and drop playing it after January) and writing my [livejournal.com profile] girlsgunsfic story, which is such great fun and also SUPER LONG. However, as [livejournal.com profile] girlsgunsfic is my ridiculous ficathon, PROBABLY I can't default on it.

Anyway, flist: it is Christmas Eve Eve. I assume many of you are off doing things with your friends and loved ones, and I will be doing a bit of that, myself. But for those of you who are on the internet right now, feel free to say hi in the comments. I think it's a good night for a gif party.

pirateygoodness: (text: dancing or explosions)
Got my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide assignment. I've gotta say, I'm not so sure their new matching algorithm is working as advertised, but I'm pretty satisfied. I'm definitely writing out of my comfort zone, but it's something I think I can have a bit of fun with, and I'm curious to see what canon gives me so that I can start plotting something out.

I'm also ECSTATIC over people on my flist talking about [livejournal.com profile] girlsgunsfic. And about the story I'm going to write for it. And about how I get to rewatch hours and hours of TV with ladycops and call it research. And basically everything else about this fic exchange, it is going to be MAGNIFICENT I hope.

Also, Batwoman #0 came out today, and omg spoilers )

I am having a really odd experience with Batwoman in general, though. Because I'm not used to like, ~reading comics on a regular basis, so I don't know if I'm doing it "properly"? I also don't understand how there can be one character in multiple titles and like. . .people are expected to figure out how to keep track of that?

Part of my issue, I think, is that I care very deeply about Kate Kane and to an extent Renee Montoya but I HATE BATMAN MORE THAN ANYTHING IN THE UNIVERSE, and I will feel that way for ETERNITY BECAUSE HE IS AWFUL. So I want to avoid stuff I don't like, while getting as much of what I like as possible.
pirateygoodness: (festive: but baby it's cold outside)
I was trying to sign up for Yuletide, but the server is clearly overloaded, and it's eaten my signup twice, now. STILL, I'M TOTALLY DOING IT THIS YEAR. EVENTUALLY. It's odd, though - all of my regular shows (except for Gossip Girl) are eligible fandoms this year, so it's hardly going to be an exercise in stretching myself to write for small fandoms.

Then again, given how much free time I've got to write, that's probably a good thing.

OH ALSO, SPEAKING OF WINTER FIC CHALLENGES.

TELL YOUR FRIENDS. Signups are here, they're open until the 19th (this Friday), and it's going to be FUN. Multiple fandoms, but you only need to know two from the list. PLUS, LADY COPS. If any of you want banners to pimp the challenge in your journals, let me know. If any of you are considering signing up, also let me know.

Also, SPEAKING OF LADY COPS, Fringe is killing me with how amazing it is. I have so many feelings about Olivia Dunham and Other Olivia Dunham and how pretty they are and also ew, Peter and just. OMG. Anna Torv is destroying my heart with her acting skills and also her FACE and also the way she looks in leather jackets and button-down shirts. Next week is going to be amazing.

I'm also thinking of gauging my ears. Not, like, a lot - I just like the idea of very tiny 10g plugs, because I can't really wear a lot of my regular earrings (with skulls and electric guitars and stuff on them) to work, but I miss having some element of vaguely punk-rock aesthetic in my daily attire. But then I can't wear my current earrings without letting my ears stretch back. But 10g is very, very small (2.6mm vs the 1mm I'm already pierced at), so I don't know. Angst, etc.
